Ofcom to lengthen wifi range

08/08/2006

Telecoms regulator Ofcom is looking at ways to increase the legal range of high-powered WiFi (wireless fidelity, a type of wireless local area network) equipment to 6.2 miles. If the move is successful, the extra range could have profound effects for both the consumer and the industry.

Ofcom intends to up power limits for 2.4Ghz band equipment in rural areas, which could be used to provide internet access where laying cables is too expensive. Power limitations currently exist to minimise the risk of conflicting signals, yet according to the industry watchdog, ‘in rural areas there are likely to be fewer users and hence a lower probability of interference.’

For internet service providers this it good news. Put simply, it means more contracts to more people, as long as issues surrounding interference are managed properly. Furthermore, the benefits for business would be notable — with office space costs spiralling in town and city centres, the ability to connect to the web in rural areas could open the door for cost cutting moves into the country.

Mike Roberts, senior analyst with Informa Media and Telecoms, points to a number of incidences of this throughout the UK. ‘Telabria uses both the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz bands to offer wireless broadband services to businesses and consumers in Kent — but higher power limits could lead to the launch of many more regional wireless broadband providers.’

An exact timetable for the plan has yet to see the light of day, but if the move is approved, it is likely to affect services provided outside of towns and cities significantly.
