ComProp - NO RECOMMENDATION

03/01/2001

TV company ComProp has sold off many of its subsidiaries in a bid to return to its original TV and video rental business. Channel Television and the Creative Channel were sold in June to Media Holdings for £16.3m. The loss-making Bourne Training Group was sold to its management in May and in September the group's freehold property in Jersey and Guernsey was sold to Walter Property for £10.5m, generating a profit of £3.8m. After the sale of Channel Television, the company changed its name to ComProp and Michael Lucas resigned to stay with Channel Television. Also, John Henwood, the chief executive since 1987 who started his career with the company as a trainee in 1962, is set to retire in December 2001. These changes and disposals triggered a profits jump from £484,000 to £14.7m in the half year to September, which included exceptionals of £14.3m (nil) from disposals. The total turnover was also down at £3.3m (£5.6m). The continuing activities, which were profitable in the period, include the TV and video rental business - now re-branded under its original name of Channel Rentals - and Channel Publications and TABS, the search and credit database. Despite having a cash pile of around £10m the shares are trading close to their 12 month low. Furthermore, broker Collins Stewart predicts pre-tax profits of £1.2m with EPS of 7p for 2001. Interestingly, this is the same as the profits in 2000.
