Stem cell specialist ReNeuron(RENE) says newly published pre-clinical data confirm the effcacy of its ReN001 line for stroke treatment.
The Guildford-based company declares that the study – using its CTX neural stem cell line and conducted with Dr Mike Modo and his team at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry – shows a recovery of up to 83 per cent in the motor function of stroke-affected rats.
AIM-quoted ReNeuron points out that the data, compiled before Dr Modo moved to the University of Pittsburgh, has been published online in the 'leading journal' Stem Cells 1. The company says the study observed a 'gradual improvement in motor function' between four and 12 weeks after implanting the CTX cells.
Dr John Sinden, ReNeuron's chief scientific officer, argues that the study's findings 'confirm the strength of the company's position in the development of cell-based treatments for eligible stroke patients'. Company spokesmen say it hopes to establish efficacy and proof of concept for ReN001 next year before moving on to development partnerships and clinical trials.
Floated at 195p in 2000, ReNeuron shares have until recently been dire performers. Having traded between 7.10p and 3.28p over the past year, they now change hands at 4.5p, up 0.075p this morning, at which they value the company at £28 million and offer speculative recovery potential, provided that progress on ReN001 is maintained.
