Publisher wins Quoted Company Award

27/01/2011 Robert Tyerman

Mark Smith, Australian chief executive of Quercus Publishing (QUPP), was named Entrepreneur of The Year at yesterday's Quoted Company Awards. As head of the PLUS-quoted publisher, now riding high on the best-selling crime stories of Swedish author Stieg Larsson and working on new potential blockbusters, Smith joined a formidable array of winners of the awards, sponsored by accountant Grant Thornton and organised by Growth Company Investor.

Brian Winterflood, cheerful self-made founder of share dealing group Winterflood Securities, one of the pioneers of the AIM market and a generally benign force in the smaller companies sector, took the Lifetime Achievement Award 2011at a ceremony in the impressively Gothic surroundings of London's Natural History Museum. Peter Slabbert, chief executive of fast-growing AIM-quoted Avon Rubber (AVON), whose operations span protection and defence and dairy business, took the prize for Chief Executive of The Year.

TV news presenter Mishal Husain welcomed a packed audience from the worlds of commerce, finance, law and the media. A panel of judges from the same disciplines had chosen the winners of these coveted awards from an impressive short list of candidates.

Chairman of The Year was John Rennocks of Nestor Healthcare (NSR), subject of an agreed £133 million bid from Saga Group. John Di-Stefano of housebuilder Telford Homes (TEF) won the crown for Finance Director of The Year, while Colin Glass, founder director of medical equipment concern Surgical Innovations (SUN), who helped secure funding for its reverse takeover of the Haemocell group, was named Non-executive Director of The Year.

The prize for Investor of the Year went to Mike Prentis of BlackRock Smaller Companies investment trust. Emis Group (EMIS), the UK's leading supplier of software and related services to general practitioners, took the trophy for IPO of The Year, having raised £50 millon on AIM at March.

International media and marketing business ebiquity (EBQ)'s £7.9 million takeover of rival Xtreme, which doubled the company's size, was named Deal of The Year. Pizza delivery group Domino's Pizza's move to the full list of the London Stock Exchange won the 'Aim to Main 2011' award, while Christian Hogg of Hong Kong-based China MediTech was named Emerging Markets CEO of The Year.

Afterwards comedian Stephen K Amos regaled the assembly with his special brand of humour. Guests then repaired to the bar and the serious business of the evening began.
