Retinal imaging specialist Optos is to join a major US study into age-related eye deterioration after significant clinical study results.
The fully-listed company says it will participate in Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), a nationwide study conducted by the US National Eye Institute to identify methods for slowing vision loss caused by Age Related Macular Disease (AMD), an eye complaint widespread among the elderly.
According to Optos, a 122-patient study by the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California used Optos widefield scanning technology to establish that 76 per cent of eyes in patients with AMD had peripheral abnormalities. AREDS2 will involve 4,200 subjects and will use Optos auto-fluorescence devices to monitor the effectiveness of treatment in the patients.
Roy Davis, chief executive of Optos, declares the results from the Doheny study 'further prove the value of our technology in shedding new light on diseases and pathologies present in the retina.'
Optos shares, which have traded between 133.5p and 79p over the past year, now change hands at 84.5p, valuing the company at £59.5 million.
