SRT wins Lifeboat support

Secure Communications specialist Software Radio Technology (SRT) has won a contract to supply transponders to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Loss-making SRT, headed by entrepreneur Simon Tucker, has signed an agreement to provide its AIS Class B transponders to another group, Raycomm Electronics, for use in a system developed by Raycomm to help the RNLI track and manage its lifeboat fleet. Mark Morgan, the RNLI’s radiocommunications project officer, says ‘the RNLI considers the AIS Class B to be an important technology in augmenting existing search and rescue systems’.

A company spokesman would not disclose the likely financial value of the deal to AIM-quoted SRT. But endorsement from the RNLI should help win further contracts for the AIS Class Bs.

Shares in SRT, which has negotiated contracts for its TETRA (Terrestrial Tracked Radio) secure handset system with the armed forces of China, Korea and the USA, have swung between 38p in 2005 and 59p last year. They now stand at 49.5p, valuing the company at £44 million, and might, at some stage, repay a brave punt.
