Straight to the bottom line

Jonathan Straight, the green-minded and eccentric entrepreneur with a passion for outlandish spectacles, sees brighter prospects ahead for his Straight recycling container business. The founder and chief executive, whose snazzy eyewear ensures a high profile for him and his company, retains a positive vision for Straight even after interim losses of £936,000 on flat sales of £13.5 million.

Poor trading in the retail business and goodwill write-offs caused the losses. But Straight, who set up the company in 1993 as a one-man operation, insists recent
cost-lowering moves have reduced its annual carbon footprint dramatically and set a leaner retail business on track for profits in 2009.

He says the core trade business is ‘in excellent shape’ – with buoyant sales and a strong order book. Straight has grown the company into a leading supplier of kerbside recycling boxes and other recycling containers, though the shares, which floated on AIM in 2003 at 80p and peaked at 314p in 2006, are now a lowly 43.5p.
