Cash dispensers under attack

04/10/2004

Operators of fee-charging ATM machines, of which there are a number on AIM, such as Cardpoint, Moneybox and Scott Tod, are under attack from a report published by Nationwide Building Society for their agendas to raise fees per transaction in order to increase profits.

Claiming more than one in three cash machines now charge, costing consumers more than £60 million a year, Nationwide is a proponent of keeping cash machines 'free of fee', whether it be located in a bank or 'remote' location such as a train station, shopping centre or pub.

The report claims that of the 5,635 cash machines installed in 2003, 64 per cent were fee-charging. The typical charge now is £1.50.

Nationwide is calling upon LINK members (LINK is the organisation that runs the cash machine network) to create a code of practice that includes a stipulation that machines that charge will have on-screen warnings and fees will be index-linked and capped at £1.50 per transaction.

Sector: General Industrials
