Costis Papadimitrakopoulos of mobile technology specialist Globo disagrees with the use of the terms ‘emerging markets’. He argues, ‘As far as many of the territories in Africa are concerned, these are not emerging markets.
‘They are territories with well-established mobile infrastructure systems that are in many ways – for example, mobile payments – more advanced than what we have over here.’ He adds that, with laptops continuing to be too expensive for many consumers in the developing world, mobile phones will represent the ‘key medium’ by which billions of people will be able to use the internet.
‘For now, this is the only device that will enable people to access the internet and use all the information that it contains,’
he maintains.
