Nigel Alldritt, finance director of Majestic Wine, has a clear image of the company’s customers, and in particular their motoring choices. ‘Prior to the move to selling packs of six bottles [Majestic previously sold its bottles in packs of 12], most of our customers came from the older, BMW and Audi-driving classes. However, we are now getting many younger people’.
Furthermore, while many companies have been plagued by nuisance and under-age drinkers, ‘we are very unlikely to get people that are drunk or under-age attempting to visit our stores’.
Regarding the increasing popularity of its ‘fine wine’ offerings, Alldritt acknowledges it is ‘counter-intuitive’ at a time of austerity. He suggests, ‘With people increasingly choosing to eat at home, we are benefiting from those looking to spend £20 on a good bottle of wine.’
