People: Lonrho needs Needham

23/05/2011 Robert Tyerman

Africa-focused mini-conglomerate and recent AIM departee Lonrho has appointed former minister of trade Sir Richard Needham as a non-executive director.

Needham, who held the trade post from 1992 to 1995 under John Major, having been Northern Ireland minister under Margaret Thatcher and later Major, left politics in 1997 after Labour came to power and has since been involved in a number of companies. These include the former General Electric Company, engineering group Meggitt and Avon Rubber, where he currently serves as chairman.

Lonrho chairman David Lenigas declares that Needham ‘has extensive governmental and commercial experience’ and brings ‘in-depth experience of working in the Far East, a region where Lonrho is seeing growing interaction for trade and infrastructure projects between Africa and the Far East’.
