People: Avanti’s Afghan hopes
David Williams, chief executive of broadband-by-satellite concern Avanti Communications, is optimistic about the company’s plans to bring broadband by satellite to Iraq and Afghanistan: ‘These are regions that have a high demand for broadband internet as it would massively help with growth.’
Williams, who concedes that he himself has not personally visited the two countries, remarks that Avanti has a ‘seasoned team on the ground’ in those countries. He is also enthusiastic about the company’s plans for Africa.
Avanti, which is planning to bring broadband to Africa through its Hylas-2 satellite, is entering a continent that Williams insists has a ‘burning need for a high-quality communications network’. However, he warns that, while there is ‘a lot of inward investment’, it can be a ‘very challenging’ place to do business.
