People: Fruit for the rich

06/04/2011 Robert Tyerman

Eric Sung, the finance director at China’s largest orange grower, Asian Citrus, opines that there are a number of factors driving the increasing uptake of the sweet fruit. He remarks that these include the ‘increasing health consciousness in China’, which is allied to the spread of supermarkets into rural regions.

Regarding the thorny issue of wage inflation, he asserts that, while wages ‘have risen by as much as 30 per cent in Shanghai’, in rural areas, where the majority of Asian’s workers operate, the rises have been ‘much less’.

Sung is also straightforward about another key driver of increasing orange consumption. ‘The wealthy buy more fruit as it is a discretionary purchase, and juice usage increases with income levels.’
