Andrew Gee, the British non-executive director at Chinese retail security specialist Global Lock, argues that there are some immense social changes taking place in China: ‘As China gets richer, one consequence is increasing crime, with the main threat to our clients coming from break-ins at night.’
He notes that it was not too long ago that the traditional way of safeguarding a shop in China was either having the shop owner sleep in the premises or ‘you would often have an elderly member of the family coming at night and sleeping in the shop’.
Gee suggests another trend will be ‘community security’ as increasing numbers of people move from apartment blocks to housing estates.
Another possible development Global Lock could exploit is the increasing interest among Chinese parents in child safety. ‘As the middle class gets bigger, individuals become more focused on security, and the interest in China in child safety is particularly strong due to their one-child policy.’
