Scottish oilman John McGoldrick, former luminary of Enterprise Oil and now chairman of Caza Oil & Gas, is hoping for plenty of new year cheer from the company’s promising projects in Louisiana and Texas.
Caza is starting to drill in the Arran field, which holds an estimated 250 billion cubic feet of gas, where it has a 23 per cent stake, and has high hopes of Tiree, with a potential 150 billion cubic feet, and other prospects.
McGoldrick brings an unusual instinct for tactics to his Caza role. His father played for Millwall Football Club in the old £7-a-week days and his nephew plays for Partick Thistle.
He points out that life in the southern USA can still have its surprises, even for the most seasoned British traveller. Walking a few blocks home one evening after a party in Houston, he was pulled up by a police patrol car.
The concerned officers quizzed him as to why he was walking. McGoldrick explained that he had had a few drinks, only to learn that in Houston walking after drinking was liable to incur more penalties than driving in the same condition.
He recalls a celebrated local figure who regularly used to drive around with a dry martini on the dashboard.
