Milk producer Robert Wiseman came in more or less on target for the year to March, as pre-tax profits edged to £18.5m (£17.9m) on £300.2m (£287m) of sales. Because raw milk prices have been falling over the past few years the company has had to work hard for its gains, shifting 811m litres of the white stuff during the year. This represents a 7.8% increase on 2000. Wiseman continues to be one of the only milk producers to benefit from the dwindling doorstep market as the vast majority of its sales are to major supermarket chains such as Tesco, Asda and Safeway. Two areas of concern persist, however, namely an Office of Fair Trading investigation into the supply of milk to Scotland's 'middle market' and how successful the company's newly opened high-tech dairy in Droitwich will be.
