The receipt of two major contracts, from House of Fraser and Dutch department store chain Vroom & Dreesman, provided Compass with the impetus to produce a strong set of full-year figures. In the year to November, the supplier of retail sector-targeted merchandise management solutions saw revenue leap 79% to £4.3m. Profit before tax (and £212,133 of goodwill) rose 65.6% to £570,000. Compass's reliance on these large contracts is demonstrated by chief executive Ian Bowater's admittance that around 25% of revenue could be attributed to the House of Fraser deal. In a bid to reduce this dependence, Compass has launched a scaled down version of its main product. This is aimed at much smaller retailers, priced £70,000. Last summer's acquisition of Guided Image means Compass now has products suitable for designers, manufacturers and wholesalers. However, the company's main focus remains at the higher end of the market, where it is working on next-generation solutions. Resurgent retailer Marks & Spencer is apparently so taken with Compass products that it has agreed to part-fund this new project. Although Compass is small, it seems well-positioned.
