Canaccord, the Canadian-owned investment group with a strong mining bent headed by colourful veteran Tim Hoare, has recruited a mining company boss’s daughter to strengthen its sales team in technology and health. Sorca Conroy – whose father Richard, a professor and former Irish senator, heads AIM-quoted Conroy Diamonds and Gold – has joined Canaccord from HB Corporate and is enjoying her new position.

Professor Conroy wrote a thesis on the effect of jet lag on business and Sorca’s career is similarly spanning medicine and finance. She became a hospital doctor after graduating ten years ago and eventually decided, while working 120-hour shifts in accident and emergency, it could be interesting to ‘see medicine from the other side of
the fence’.

The City is more agreeable for Sorca, who likes to have some time for riding, cooking and charitable activities. ‘I am like my dad and I like doing different things.’

She says share selling can be similar to hospital work. ‘I am pleased to say I’ve lost no patients so far.’
