Following poorly received interim results, Amstrad has announced that its flagship e-m@iler product has been adopted by the Lancashire police in a pilot scheme to improve the effectiveness of its Neighbourhood Watch schemes. The e-m@iler, which incorporates e-mail facilities into a conventional home telephone, is currently selling at below cost price as Amstrad's 80%-owned subsidiary Amserve looks to build up a big enough installed base to reap profits through recurring revenues. The pilot scheme sees 62 donated free to the constabulary, though this should rise to 500. There are 150,000 NW co-ordinators in the UK at the moment. Amstrad is relying on getting revenues through the use of the e-mail facilities (which average £20 per user per year), though it is also bargaining on opening e-m@iler screens to the wiles of advertisers. Amstrad's advert delivery system will enable advertisers to direct their sales efforts according to demographic information. For the six months to the end of December Amserve, 20%-owned by Dixons, made a loss of £4.9m.
