Renewable energy play Alkane is in expansionist mood after £1.3 million first-half losses on strong revenues.
AIM-quoted Alkane achieved an 83 per cent increase in turnover to £8.4 million in the six months to June, but hefty increases in costs and other expenses led to a marginal increase in pre-tax losses. The company, which captures methane from coal mines, landfills, waste water plants and other sources for electricity generation, moved into £134,000 profits in its UK operations, which had the effect of cutting the group loss after minority interests from £894,000 to £520,000.
Alkane's Pro2 division in Germany increased interim turnover from £3.9 million to £6.6 million and had a £27 million order book at the end of August. At 18.75p, down from a 2005 high of 49p, the shares are a recovery punt.
