Ray Akers, the affable Yank who heads Akers Biosciences is exuding über-confidence these days as his venture continues to make progress on all fronts.
His company has developed an extensive range of rapid and cost- effective diagnostic kits that detect HIV, malaria, hepatitis, Lyme disease and others. It also has products in the pipeline that measure white blood cell counts, anaemia, lithium levels and gonorrhoea.
In a welcome address to shareholders in June, Akers was able to reveal that his company had received FDA approval in the US for its Hepain/Platelet 4 test, a kit that measures the likely side-effects of Heparin, a blood anti-coagulant medicine widely used in the US.
This news was swiftly followed up by a fundraising at 76p that reeled in £847,000, money which will be devoted to market and promote the Heparin test kit.
Says Akers, 'FDA approval for this product adds to the approval we have for our lithium product line. To say I'm in a confident frame of mind is to understate matters. Akers Bioscience has strategic alliances, joint ventures, sales and distribution routes and many more products in the pipeline. 2004 is shaping up very well indeed.'
